Five of the Latest Solutions for MIL Standards
ATEC BLOG
As technology and its innumerable capabilities grow, so too do the standards by which the world measures for compliance. There have been multiple revisions and updates to MIL Standards, and with that, equipment suited for testing has also adapted to keep up with the changes. Being able to get the right equipment is key to testing. Here are five of the latest test equipment solutions for MIL Standards that you can rent at ATEC.

MIL-STD-461G RS105: Radiated Susceptibility, Transient, Electromagnetic Field, or EMP

The RS105 portion of MIL-STD-461G describes the standards for testing Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) susceptibility of military and commercial electronics. It addresses the risk of radiated exposure, and sets the standard for how much EMP electrical/electronic equipment must be able to safely withstand. It’s applicable to military aircraft for safety critical equipment, and subsystems located in an external installation. During testing, the EUT should not malfunction or show a loss of integrity beyond the tolerances indicated in MIL-STD-461G RS105 when subjected to an EMP waveform. Testing should begin at 10% of specified level, and at least five pulses shall be applied at the rate of not more than one pulse per minute.

Solution:

RS105The Montena EMP 25K-2-23 NEMP Generator is able to test in compliance with MIL-STD-461G RS105. It uses direct capacitive circuits or Marx technology to create peaking circuits, which are able to increase the impulse rise time. It scales up to a charging voltage of 1.2 MV, offers an interlocking switch and automatic capacitor discharge for high safety requirements, and has a remote control unit for added safety.

Test with confidence that you have the right equipment for these standards when you rent any of these products from Advanced Test Equipment Rentals. To request a quote, ask a question or more, please feel free to contact us.

MIL-STD-461G CS117 Conducted Susceptibility, Lightning Induced Transients, Cables and Power Leads

MIL-STD-461G CS117 denotes the interface and associated verification requirements that all safety-critical equipment interconnecting cables, including complete power cable bundles and individual power leads, must meet. Testing requirements include lightning transient generators, injection transformers, current monitor probes, attenuators, voltage probes, oscilloscopes, and LISNs. It may also apply to equipment performing non-safety critical functions, when specified by the procuring activity.

Solution:

The AVI3000 Indirect Lightning Generator by EMC PartnAVI3000 BT7er offers full compliance up to level 3 for PIN injection and cable bundle tests, including single stroke, multiple strokes, and multiple bursts, and complies with MIL-STD-461G CS 117 requirements for internal test equipment. Built by a trusted manufacturer of indirect lightning, the EMC Partner AVI3000 is fully compliant without needing additional hardware, offers all six waveforms in one unit, includes phase angle synchronization to 800Hz, and more.

MIL-STD-461G CS118 Personnel Borne Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

MIL-STD-461G CS118 tests the ability of the equipment under test (EUT) to withstand personnel borne electrostatic discharge (ESD) in a powered up configuration. This standard applies to electrical, electronic, and electromechanical subsystems and equipment that are powered with a person-operated interface. To meet MIL-STD-461G CS118, the EUT should not show any signs of malfunction, decline of performance, or deviation from intended specifications as outlined by the chart below:

ESD Generator SpecsEM Test NX30

Solution:

The EM Test ESD NX30 Electrostatic Discharge Simulator tests voltage up to 30 kV for air and contact discharge, and is compliant with MIL-STD-461G CS118. The discharge tips and network can easily be changed as they are plugged into the discharge gun. It can be powered by battery operation while testing, and offers better control and analysis with built-in software, an activity log, and a USB interface.

MIL-STD-704F: Aircraft Electric Power Characteristics

MIL-STD-704F refers to the safety of electrical systems of aircraft, and is intended to guarantee compatibility between the aircraft electrical system, external power, and airborne utilization equipment. It sets the requirements of AC and DC power for aircraft at the input terminals of electric utilization equipment. The latest version of MIL-STD-704F covers both fixed 400Hz and 60Hz frequency power buses as well as variable (wild) frequency power buses ranging from 360Hz to 800Hz.

MIL-STD-1275E: Characteristics of 28 Volt DC Input Power to Utilization Equipment in Military Vehicles

MIL-STD- 1275E relates to the testing procedures for military and defense vehicles. It defines the operating voltage limits and transient voltage characteristics of 28 VDC electrical powers at the input power terminals. There are three requirements illustrated by MIL-STD-1275E: voltage compatibility, or the conditions under which the equipment is expected to operate; voltage compatibility verification setup, which outlines the requirements for environmental conditions, equipment calibration and more; voltage compatibility verification method, which defines the requirements for how the equipment under test is certified for voltage range, voltage ripple, cranking surges, and more.
