The purpose of MIL-STD-704 is to ensure compatibility between the aircraft electric system, external power, and airborne utilization equipment.

This standard establishes the requirements and characteristics of AC and DC power for aircraft provided at the input terminals of electric utilization equipment. MIL-HDBK- 704-1 through-8 defines test methods and procedures for determining airborne utilization equipment compliance with the electric power characteristics requirements defined herein. Electromagnetic interference and voltage spikes are not covered by this standard.

MIL-STD-704F is the current version of this standard which supersedes MIL-STD-704E. Both fixed 400Hz and 60Hz frequency power buses as well as variable (wild) frequency power buses ranging from 360Hz to 800Hz are covered by Revision F of the standard.
