An ionograph, or ionic contamination tester, performs ionic contamination cleanliness testing on components like printed circuit boards (PCBs) with water or alcohol extraction media. The goal of ionic contamination testing is to provide data quickly and without violating any non-destructive testing (NDT) principles. Specifically, an ionograph measures PCB and other electronic components’ quality before the component is encapsulated and integrated into the device or system, which ensures any contaminants are not encapsulated in the finished product. Test engineers often rent ionographs to achieve ANSI or J-STD001B compliance.
