What is an XRF Analyzer?
An X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer is a non-destructive tool for determining the elemental composition of a sample. Also known as XRF guns or XRF machines, these machines fire X-rays at a sample and measure the resulting X-ray fluorescence. They are both quick and precise, and capable of measuring the presence of lead (Pb) or other metals.
Thanks to the simple point-and-shoot functionality of modern portable XRF guns, inspections can be performed in mere seconds. These and similar tools are also used in a variety of similar test methods like Positive Material Identification (PMI), Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), and Optical Emission Spectrometry.
How Does An XRF Analyzer Work?
Firing an analyzer at a sample blasts the material with X-rays. Once the sample is stimulated, fluorescence occurs, and the machine measures the emissions, converts them into electrical pulses, and processes the pulses into data. Finally, the gun and/or connected PC displays the results, which reveal the proportions of specific alloys and other elements within the sample.
Each element on the periodic table exhibits an individual fluorescent fingerprint, and XRF analyzers capture these identifying signals. From them, they can identify the presence of each element and give a comprehensive report of the sample’s elemental composition.
XRF Rental Applications
Common XRF test applications include:
- Archaeology
- Recycling
- Precious metal inspection (PMI)
- Mining/geology
- Soil inspection
- Art analysis
- Consumer goods analysis
Choosing the Right Rental
Renting an XRF analyzer can be intimidating, but ATEC would be happy to help out. Consider the following specifications before deciding on a rental.
Material Under Test
Consider what is going to be tested for, whether it's copper in centuries-old sandstone or sulfur at a mining site, and keep this in mind when researching.
