EMI Receivers

EMI receivers, also called EMC analyzers, are spectrum analyzers for EMC testing where transient signals or spurious emissions must be acquired with fast acquisition rates. Compared to pre-compliance receivers, full compliance EMI receivers perform the same tests as in an EMC lab when a device is sent in for certification. They require a preselector and other RF components to be built into the receiver itself for full accuracy and reduction of background signals.

When choosing an EMI receiver, many considerations should be made, including the following:
  • Resolution bandwidth (RBW) requirements for taking a sufficient amount of measurement points within a frequency span.
  • Requirements for Quasi peak (QP) detectors or CISPR average detectors called out by test standards.
  • Filters, low noise floor, and software displaying pass or fail conditions according to certain test standards.
Multiple organizations have set standards for testing these emissions, including CISPR, IEC/EN, FCC, and MIL-STD. Specific standards EMI receivers test to are: ATEC provides the highest performance and widest selection of EMI receiver rentals and EMC spectrum analyzers.
