Standard Overview
IEC 62764-1 defines the safety limits for low-frequency magnetic fields produced by passenger cars and light commercial vehicles and how they can affect any person operating said vehicles. This standard is specified for automotive vehicles such as sedans, delivery vans, light-duty pick-up trucks, and anything in between, and the standardization of operating conditions and measurement volumes and/or surfaces. Plug-in vehicles, EVSE, or electric vehicle supply equipment, and associated cables are included in this document, while the charging stations themselves are not.
The specifics of the vehicles evaluated by this standard are defined in ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.3, under categories M1 and N1, with respect to human exposure. They go as follows:
There are exceptions to this standard. Magnetic field transients less than 200ms that occur while electrical functions are activated are the exception and are not considered for this standard. Additionally, this document does not include procedures related to WPT, or wireless power transfer, equipment operating in automotive environments as related to human exposure. Those procedures are covered in IEC PAS 63184.
ATEC rents equipment that complies with IEC 62764 testing from leading manufacturers such as Narda and Wavecontrol. To learn more about products that comply with this standard, view the links below.
The specifics of the vehicles evaluated by this standard are defined in ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.3, under categories M1 and N1, with respect to human exposure. They go as follows:
- M1: Any vehicle used to transport passengers with less than eight seats, not including the driver’s seat.
- N1: Any vehicle used to carry goods that also has a maximum carrying capacity under 3.5 tons.
