Ion chamber survey meters measure the radiation rates and accumulated doses of a variety of different sources of radiation, including alpha rays, beta rays, gamma rays, and X-rays. Most of these types of meters are gas-filled and consist of two main components: processing electronics and a Geiger tube. A Geiger tube is filled with low-pressure, inert gas which responds to the presence of radiation by ionizing. An anode then determines how many ionized particles are present and displays the radiation reading on an LCD screen. Other types of radiation survey meters include scintillators and solid state detectors.
